ANDREA MASTROVITO. TO DRAW IS TO KNOW
BRIAN ENO. REFLECTED
«What I think we are doing when we find pleasure in sex, drugs, art and religion is we are rehearsing our ability to surrender. So, this brings us, having taken a very long way round, to why I think this is what I would like to see in a church now. If you try to imagine what the effect of those pieces of work, the works by Beato Angelico, Perugino, Piero della Francesca, the effect those works must have had on the 15th or 16th century eye: that is what I’m trying to recreate. I should be humbler than I am, but I’m trying to com- pete with them in 21st century terms. I’m trying to say “this is what I think should be in churches now”» (B. Eno)

«I felt laid bare when Giuseppe Panza entered my studio because he looked at my paintings so closely and as such length. And in a way, it might seem absurd to spend so much time and intensity looking at a monochrome painting. All of this was very powerful.» (Sean Shanahan)
