SHIRIN NESHAT. DO U DARE!

With Do U Dare!, Shirin Neshat opens a new chapter in her artistic practice and presents the public with a trilogy of extraordinary intensity. The work is being shown for the first time in Venice, concurrently with the 61st International Art Exhibition.

This volume accompanies its debut by bringing together critical essays and the artist’s own voice. Together, they trace a path that conveys the full complexity of a project developed at the intersection of exile, identity formation, and the violence embedded in contemporary systems of visibility.

The three videos—set in Brooklyn, on Wall Street, and in the American suburbs—transform emblematic sites of present-day America into settings of alienation, control, performance, and resistance.

Taking an individual story as its narrative and symbolic point of departure, Shirin Neshat develops a visual reflection on the increasingly unstable boundary between subject and image, reality and representation.

The volume Do U Dare! not only documents a new phase in the artist’s practice, but also reveals her ability to interpret the present through images of powerful poetic and critical intensity.
