SEAN SCULLY: LONG LIGHT
‘Harmony is coming out of what you know. It’s affirming what you already know. […] So disharmony is much more interesting and life affirming than harmony, because disharmony eventually, through history, we change into harmony.’
The book presents the works by the Irish-born American artist, who is a master of light and colour (exhibition curated by Anna Bernardini, 19 April 2019–6 January 2020, at Villa and Collezione Panza, Varese, FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano). Scully’s research into colour, structure, geometry and the vibration of colours in relation to light is combined with a minimalist yet emotional, experiential and hypnotic style that lies at the perpetual boundary between figuration and abstraction. From his first acrylics in the 1970s and his works on paper, through photos, installations and, among other series, Eleuthera, Doric and Passenger, we come to the reproduction of a site-specific work created in the grounds of Villa Panza, and his Landline works on glass.
