JOSEF ALBERS. Meditations

Meditations is born from the encounter between the work of one of the greatest masters of the twentieth century and Villa e Collezione Panza.
The volume reconstructs not only the centrality of Josef Albers in the visual culture of the last century, but also his surprising proximity to the collecting horizon of Giuseppe Panza di Biumo. Although absent from his historic collection, Albers stands as a decisive precursor to it in terms of rigor, discipline of vision, and that habitual way of understanding the work as a field of relations between color, space, and visual consciousness.
The catalogue texts explore the artist’s celebrated series—Variant and Homage to the Square—, make it possible to reinterpret the Villa’s collection, and offer a study of Albers’ presence at Galleria Il Milione, Milan.
The volume also includes a new poem by Julie Agoos, accompanied by a selection of poems and letters by Josef Albers and an anthology with texts by Elaine de Kooning and Colm Tóibín.
