Il volume è il risultato di una ricerca inedita sulla relazione tra la fotografia di Mario Giacomelli, uno dei più importanti fotografi del Novecento, e Alberto Burri. Attraverso il ritrovamento di opere e documenti inediti dagli archivi Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri, Giacomelli e Sarteanesi, è stato possibile ricostruire non solo le vicende degli incontri e gli scambi di amicizia ma anche un’affinità stilistica ed etica rintracciabile nelle loro opere.
Il tema del paesaggio e alcune specifiche serie di Giacomelli – come Presa di coscienza sulla natura, Storie di Terra o Motivo suggerito dal taglio dell’albero – ritrovano sintonie formali in alcuni Sacchi, Combustioni, Cretti e Cellotex di Burri, in una rielaborazione del reale che appare convenzionalmente astratta ma non per questo meno afferente all’uomo e alla sua condizione.
Il libro accompagna la mostra al MAXXI di Roma, alla Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri a Città di Castello, e a Palazzo del Duca a Senigallia (2021).

Il volume è il primo libro in Italia dedicato esclusivamente al disegno di Giuseppe Penone. Attraverso una selezione di opere, a cui si aggiungono delle serie fotografiche e un lavoro unico titolato “L’impronta del disegno - indice destro”, si ripercorre il rapporto dell’artista con il disegno e anche con la scrittura che tante volte trova posto nelle sue carte.
Come nelle parole di Marco Tonelli: «Il disegno di Penone, legato alla figura e alla metafora dell’albero e delle sue declinazioni visive e linguistiche, è dunque qualcosa di originario e non veicola semplicemente idee già formate, non è un mezzo di espressione, né è la parte concettuale o progettuale del suo lavoro ..., ma quella primaria e fenomenologica, che gli permette per certi versi, come la scrittura, di dire e pensare e performare il lavoro di scultore».
Nel volume anche un’intervista a Giuseppe Penone di Francesco Guzzetti.
